How to Choose the Right NDIS Provider for You or Your Loved One
7 practical tips for NDIS participants, families and support coordinators
Choosing an NDIS provider is a big decision, whether it's for you or for someone you love. The provider you pick will be part of everyday life, helping with new skills, getting out into the community and living more independently.
Passion Flower Care was started by a family who has been through this. Our son has Level 3 Autism, and we know what it's like to search for support that sees the person and not only the plan. This is what we've learned about finding a good fit.
1. Start with what matters to you
Before you compare providers, think about your goals. What would a good week look like? Maybe it's learning to catch the bus, cooking a favourite meal, joining a social group or moving into a shared home. The goals in your NDIS plan are a good place to start, and a good provider will build support around them rather than asking you to fit around their services.
2. Check that they're NDIS registered
Registered providers have met the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission's standards for quality and safety. You can look up any provider on the Commission's online Provider Register. If your plan is NDIA-managed, this matters even more, because those plans can only be used with registered providers.
3. Ask how they personalise support
Every person is different, so ask each provider how they shape support around the individual:
- How do you get to know a new participant before support starts?
- How do you match support workers to a person's personality and interests?
- How do you adapt when someone's needs or goals change?
- How do you support people with autism or complex communication needs?
Good answers put the person at the centre. Listen for talk of routine, consistency and choice.
4. Look at the services they offer
Using one provider for several kinds of support can make life simpler. Check whether they offer:
- Personal care and help with daily activities
- Skill building and life skills development
- Community participation and social programs
- Group and centre-based activities
- Transport assistance
- Supported Independent Living (SIL) and shared living
5. Ask about their team
You'll see your support workers more than anyone else at the provider, so ask about them. How are they trained? Do they have NDIS Worker Screening clearances? Will you see the same faces each week? Familiar people make it easier to build trust, and progress comes more easily once that trust is there.
6. Make sure communication is easy
Ask how the provider keeps families and support coordinators updated, who your main contact will be, and how quickly they reply to questions or concerns. You should feel comfortable raising a problem and confident that someone will listen.
7. Trust your instincts
Meet the team, ask plenty of questions and notice how you feel. Do they listen? Do they talk to the participant, or only about them? Do they make you feel welcome? You know yourself or your loved one best, and if something feels off, it's fine to keep looking.
A quick checklist
- NDIS registered
- Support built around your goals
- Services that cover your needs now and later on
- Trained, screened and consistent support workers
- Clear, friendly communication
- A team that feels like the right fit
